I opened the papers today to this page and was utterly stunned at this page staring back at me.

I don’t even know where to begin.

Deviating from my usual reviews, I’m talking about Urban’s article, “The Barbie Brigade” (May 11, 2012) today.

For you who are not in Singapore, Urban is Singapore’s attempt to show Singaporeans (and alas, the world) that our papers can do more than report on train breakdowns.

But their so-called “latest beauty craze” has been around for a very long time. Since before this blog even started and this blog is going to be three this year (-throws confetti-).

This is very old news.

If you haven’t yet read the article, here are some images I took for you

I think they were trying really hard to write a balanced article but I did feel an underlying current of disapproval from the writer herself.

Perhaps one might think that I’m being over-sensitive but I do feel that GAL style was misrepresented in this article.

The word “unreal”. There are different makeup styles and everyone is different, in the GAL circle, the latest trend is to be natural but perhaps Urban didn’t get the memo.

1) “… who are obsessed”
The word “obsessed” suggested negativity. Why not say “who transforms themselves to look like dolls and manga characters”?

2) “… ultra feminine look entails wigs or hair extensions, long lashes, plenty of eyeliner and…”
It’s interesting that they would say it’s ‘ultra-feminine’ because it’s not always so. The models from EGG and Ranzuki take on active styles.

The use of excessive eyeliner will only serve to make eyes look smaller so really… Umm.

3) “Their idol is…. Tsubasa Masuwaka…“
Tsu-chan isn’t the only idol out there. There are many other models who may not be as big as Tsu-chan but who are good representatives and good role-models. Yes, I’m talking about your idols, dear.

My idol’s Yui Kanno (scans of her second book to be up soon).

a) “… can make one look more youthful and feminine…” “…warns against such obsessions”
Once again, it’s putting GAL is a bad light. GAL isn’t always about dressing young, we have had models from POPSISTER, for example, in their matured form.

b) “… send out “ambiguous messages” that pander to some men’s paedophilic fantasies…”
I personally feel it’s a rather male-supremacist remark. Does he mean to say that GAL makeup and dressing up is purely to “pander” to men?

The definition of “pander”.

Pander:
1. To provide gratification to other’s desires - Merriam-Webster Dictionary
2. A person who furnishes clients for a prostitute or supplies persons for illicit sexual intercourse;  pimp - Dictionary .com
3. a person who caters to or profits from the weaknesses or vices of others -Dictionary.com

I know that when I dress up, it really is for myself. I’m not on the lookout for a partner or anything along those lines.

When I leave the house, I want to look my very best because I live everyday like my very last and it could be very well be my last day on earth. I don’t want to die looking like I just rolled out of bed.

c) “…. may have crossed the line… preening”
This part I have no issue with because spending beyond one’s means can indeed be destructive.

Except for the word “preening”. And their issue with plastic surgery. I firmly believe that what people choose to do with their own bodies is their choice and I have no issue with anyone who wants to go for plastic surgery.

Now, if you plan to follow any of Urban’s advice to “looking dolly”, watch out for a few things.

i) “Use a black liquid eyeliner…..”
Like I said, the trend now is to look natural, so swop your black liners for a brown one. It will look softer and a lot more natural.

Whether or not to extend the line past your eye is your choice, I do that sometimes to help with falsies application but avoid it when I don’t plan to wear false lashes because it makes my eye makeup look very unnatural.

ii) “Glue on the upper lash without trimming the ends….”
If the lashes are too long, you know what I always do – I cut. Make sure that you trim the lash band down to a length that you can manage because that’s the most important thing.

i) “… foundation in a shade or two lighter than your original skin…”
I always suggest finding foundation that matches your natural skin tone.

If a foundation is not your skin tone, you’ll have to waste time applying it down to your neck. Having said that, you may want to mix your foundations so that you can get a half tone lighter (if you reallyyyyyy want to have lighter skin). It’s really up to the individual.

1) “… lower lash about 2mm below your natural bottom lash line…”
I understand that some girls do this to enlarge their eyes but I strongly suggest having bottom lashes as close to your natural lash line as possible so it’ll be more natural. Especially if you’re just starting out, start close to your natural lash line.

And as for trimming, make sure you do if the ends are pokey, if the lash band is too long for your eye length or too long to handle. Always do what you feel most comfortable doing.

2) “…. brown eyeliner…”
Try using eyeshadow instead so the line will be less harsh and more natural.

3) “Draw on the inner corners of the eye and lower waterline… with a white shimmer eyeliner…”
I won’t comment on the grammar of the sentence (“…. a wider-looking eyes.”)

I generally don’t suggest using shimmer liner on the waterline. It may look okay in pictures but in real life, unless you are going for the Ageha look (Ageha back in 2007, maybe), just leave your waterline unlined. Or if you want to line it, have a short black line just under your iris, it will serve to enlarge your pupils.

Venus doesn’t have “pseudo Japanese-accented English”, it’s an Austrian accent.

And then watch this.

Saying Venus has “pseudo Japanese accented English” is like saying Arnold Schwarzeneggar has “pseudo Japanese-accented English”, but that’s just me.

Now then, let me talk about the makeup in the photos.

I don’t understand why they did this.

Or this.

The style that they used for the model’s makeup is dated.

The eye makeup is too heavy and the lips and cheeks are far too strong. She looks like a doll, yes, but maybe one from the 60s.

I cannot understand what they were thinking when they were styling the model’s hair either.

Perhaps they should have gotten someone else to do the makeup for the day, or asked the bloggers they invited to the shoot to do the makeup for the model because this looks really unacceptable.

There is no one hard and fast rule to techniques in makeup but there is one rule overall, which is to look good.

When I first came back to the blog, I started everything off with a pair of lashes and now, I’m going back to that and showing you another pair from the same series.

I’m here to tell you a little more about ナチュふわまつげ（スイートフレア）【OLM 983】today!

As usual, they come with three pairs of lashes per box and retail for 1,029 Yen.

Probably the best thing about these lashes is that I haven’t got others that are quite the same. Remember I talked about how lashes are beginning to bore me because the designs all look really similar these days?

These looked pretty intimidating in the tray at first. Notice how the they appear really thick?

The transparent lash band is extremely comfortable and shorter than the OLM982, making it a shoe-in for my eyes.

I LOVE these lashes to bits but they don’t seem to photograph too well from far.

They weren’t half as dense as I originally thought it would be. I actually don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing.

The fibres are soft and not too long. Plasticky sheen wasn’t too obvious so that part’s great

In person, these lashes look really pretty.

✔ Length: 6/10 [Really great length]
✔ Volume: 4.5/10 [They don't seem to add very much volume in spite of their designs - a little disappointing, to be honest]
✔ Ease of application: So incredibly easy – no need to trimming whatsoever. PERFECT for me!
✔ Reusable? Of course!
✔ Economical? Yuuuup. For sure. I’ve worn them a few times now and they’re holding strong.

Verdict:
I’m split on this. While they’re gorgeous in person, they don’t do much for my eyes in pictures.

Oh oh, They’re spec-safe!

I’ll try them again really soon to see what I can do but in the meantime, I would rebuy because of how convenient they are to use. Hmm. Need to find out what I was doing wrong… -stares hard-

Now, a couple of months back, a new palette surfaced on my makeup radar and it’s none other than リンメル ショコラスウィート アイズ! Rimmel’s Chocolat Sweet Palette in 03!

Rimmel is known for releasing makeup products that are exclusive to certain countries and this palette is no exception.

Available only in Japan, the palette is one of a series of five palettes.

I’m not sure why makeup brands like to make things country exclusive because quite frankly, it’s only limiting their market, but I do suppose it’s a form of strategy to boost sales.

Made in Japan, the palette comes with 4.6g worth of product and retails for 1,680 Yen.

This roughly converts to 27 SGD for 4.6g. Compare this price to the sometimes less than pigmented likes of MAC’s eyeshadow pots, which only has 1.5g of product for 28 SGD. I’ll pick Rimmel any day.

Every palette from the Rimmel Chocolat Sweet range comes with five colours and a sponge applicator.

This is based on the concept that you only really need a few colours to form a solid look: Three base colours (highlighter, mid and base), one liner colour and one glittery highlighter colour.

To use these colours, Rimmel suggest this method:

I have a slightly different method but I’ll get to that a little later.

One of the other selling points of this palette is that it’s scented.

Open the box and you’ll smell the chocolaty scent right away. Do note that the scent fades away pretty quick though, my palette became scentless after a few weeks of usage.

The little dots on A that you see are actually bits of the product that I accidently scraped off while opening the palette.

And if I have one complaint about the palette, it’s got to be about how difficult it is to open it. It comes in a snap close box and it’s can be a royal pain in the neck if you’re not careful.

Under shade

This has become my new favourite palette because of how pigmented and versatile is it.

I’ve used A as a base colour for my BYS eyeshadows as well – review for that coming soon. -winks-

Directional sunlight

Each colour is buttery smooth and so extremely pigmented, I only need one swipe with my eyeshadow brush and it’s enough to cover my entire lid.

I’m not sure why my camera couldn’t capture it but A is actually slightly pinkish, which makes it an extremely sweet base to use.

I was a little apprehensive about using any pink on my lids at first because I know how it can make my eyes look swollen (almost like someone socked me in the eye), but A was surprisingly sheer, so no trouble here.

This is how it looks when it’s sheered out.

And when used on the eyes:

Yes, I’ve been using it for some time now.

To date, no creasing. It’s a very lasting product and I’ve had days where I had to be up at 9am, all the way till 11pm and right up till then, my eyeshadow looks fresh.

Granted, it’s another neutral palette but if you travel a lot and don’t want to have to bring multiple products with you, then this palette might be for you. It’s small and packs a real pigmented punch so it goes into bags real easy as well.

Definitely a rebuy worthy product, I’m prepared to get backups of this palette because of economical it is.

BONUS CONTENT!
Like I always say, it’s important for you to experiment to see which method works best for you. There is no one fixed rule/way to do things but I do hope this will help you!

The way I use the palette :

First, apply A on the whole lid.
This colour is light and shiny, so it creates a base for the rest of your shadows to stand out. I usually try to make sure it shows a little over my eyes when I open them.

Next, apply B to the whole mid section.
This creates depth.

Then apply C to the lower half of your lids, closer to your lashes.
This gives the gradient more layers and will look better when you close your eyes. Remember, how the shadow looks when your eyes are lowered is as important as how it looks when your eyes are open.

Last, apply D to the outer corner of your eyes.
I prefer not to line my whole lower part with dark shadow because I feel it makes my eyes look smaller.

So Essence recently sent out a bunch of glosses to girls on their Facebook page and I was one of them!

Let’s take a look at how good this is together, shall we?

We’re talking about Essence’s XXXL Shine Lipgloss in No. 12, Soulmate today!

Set up in 2002, Essence is part of the parent company, cosnova Beauty, a European based company that aims to keep makeup affordable.

Their line of eyeshadows, eyeliners, mascaras and a host of lip and nail products currently retails in countries like the US, Canada, Australia, Singapore and many more.

They’re against animal testing, so major props to the company. I always like a company with corporate responsibility.

Before I head into the typical packaging and product proper, I would first like to touch a little on what’s in the gloss.

It apparently contains vitamin E and panthenol – both of which are supposed to be very moisurizing for the skin.

Ripped straight off their own site, the list is as follows:

Tocopheryl Acetate is the Vit E (source) and the Panthenol is… Well, Panthenol.

Tocopheryl Acetate is made from Tocopherol and acetic acid (source). Girls with allergies to dairy, eggs, nuts etc. (source) may want to conduct a quick patch test just to be safe because Tocopherol is derived from these organic materials.

It’s interesting to note too, that while the Tocopheryl form is excellent to prolong shelf life of the product, it may actually be absorbed so slowly by the skin that it’s almost negligible, which kind of makes me question the use of the material at all, but that’s just me being cynical.

And then there’s Panthenol, apparently good for moisturising as well as cause penetrates well into the skin (source). It’s cute, cause there’s more on the net about how good it is in hairstyling products. And what with it being tenth on the list of ingredients, I’m not sure how much will actually go into one’s skin with one application.

So as to their advertising about how moisturising this gloss is because of all that… It’s quite misleading. ^^|||

Moving on.

Each plastic tube comes sleek, slim and with a 3.90SGD price tag for 5ml of product. Score.

I have to say though, that the wand is rather long for my hand.

While this didn’t hinder my application process very much, I found it a little uncomfortable and would really prefer the wand to be shorter.

The straight applicator’s made out of a cloth-like material as well but felt stiff on my lips. Guess I’ve been too spoilt by the Japanese brands and their slanted tips.

When swatched on the back of my hand, I found the gloss to lean almost to the reddish side with tiny glimmer flecks. This made me a little worried because I don’t like overly red lips, however, when applied, the colour was almost non-existent.

Sheer and glossy for sure, this lipgloss would probably work really well layered (revisit on its way )

The smell of the gloss was sickly sweet and almost cheap to me, like candy we used to buy as kids from the corner store. But hey, looking at the price tag, who’s to complain.

The texture was smooth with almost no tackiness at all, which made the weak staying power very understandable. One sip of water and it was all over my glass.

I would probably not rebuy the same colour but would be willing to buy others cause of the price and just to try out the colours. I probably won’t be actively seeking these out because the smell’s just waaaaay too sweet for me to handle.

So, in one of the latest issues of Popteen, Maikawa-san was featured!

This is a tribute to her genius line of lashes and her continuing efforts to give us new lash designs because, let’s face it, lashes are repeating themselves a lot these days and I’ll be upfront and say I’m getting really bored.

Straight from the 900 Brown Mix Series, I give to you DUP Eyelashes Brown Mix (Model Edition) 916 [キュートeyes]!

Produced by Japanese model, Aiku Maikawa, DUP Eyelashes have long been the favourite of POPTEEN and CanCam models alike.

Retailing at 1,260 Yen, 916 is part of a series of five lashes.

Don’t get me started on the lovely packaging.

IT’S SPARKLY! It’s just so pretty?! I’m such a sucker for nice packaging.

Every box comes with two trays of lashes.

The first thing that caught my attention (aside from the pretty packaging :3) about these lashes was the advertising.

It claims to be 80% brown and 20% black, apparently to make the lashes look more natural.

I don’t know about you but while they most certainly were not jet black, they look quite black to me at first.

Yes yes, they look quite similar to another pair that I recently reviewed, no?

Guess what I went and did next.

Yes, when you compare the both in this manner, you’ll see that there indeed, is a difference between the shades. There seems to be a brownish-tinge to DUP.

And while the two designs look somewhat similar, the primary focus, the middle section, is quite different.

ナチュふわまつげ‘s (review HERE) tips are quite straight while DUP’s the one with the pointy edges.

Extremely natural, the emphasis on the pupils is unmissable.

And I LOVE the lash band. Transparent, thin and soft, they’re incredibly easy to work with and so darn comfy.

Ooo, and the length of the lash band for DUP’s 2.9cm. Even more perfect for the lazy old me. I’m especially biased towards lashes I don’t have to put in much effort into putting on.

In spite of me having used these many times, the lash band has kept its shape.

The fibres measure about 1.0cm, making this super natural and super good for you, if you wear glasses, or if you just want something really natural.

So far, I’ve done lashes and lip products sooooo we’re changing things up and looking at a cheek product today!

Yes, we’re talking about the latest Maybelline Jelly Glow Blush in 04 – Sweet Momo~

Spotted on the pages of May’s Ranzuki, Maybelline’s got a brand new line of six cream blushes.

So I went out and, against my better judgement, got myself one.

Packaged in a re-sealable plastic bag, the blush retails for 15.90SGD at Watsons and BHG.

I bought mine from Watsons at Bugis Junction and also saw a bunch of these at BHG Bugis too~

And if you’re interested, it’s made in Korea!

The actual product comes in a round, plastic dome that is absolutely tiny.

The plastic label at the back of the resealable packaging states the weight of the product to be 13.4g but I question this. Umm.

It’s a snap closure case but I cannot say for certain if this is sufficient to keep the cream blush moist for a prolonged period of time. So make sure you remember to close the case asap.

The ads claim that it’s water-resistant and that it lasts up to 6 hours but all that aside, application itself was quite off-putting.

Using my fingers meant it was slightly streaky and I had to blend a lot.

Tried using a stippling brush and failed too.

The shape of the blush also became very out of shape after being touched by my fingers so many times (I’ll explain more later).

Some might also find it unhygienic :3

Applied on my NC30 skin, the blush is a warm, shimmery pinky-peach (more pink than peachy) blush that is rather sheer.

It’s a double-edged sword in this case.

The blush is buildable but not suitable if you are short on application time. I spent a while in front of my mirror stepping forward and back, afraid I’d piled on too much in my desperation to have some form of colour on my cheeks.

I do think this would probably work well for girls who are a lot fairer! T_T

The shimmer particles are not too obvious unless hit with strong lighting at a close range.

The texture of the blush on skin turned from creamy to powdery which was quite interesting for me.

Will it last for 6 hours?
I barely noticed it on my skin cause it’s so sheer. My blushes rarely fade off because of my makeup base (RMK for the win) and the lack of perspiration (thank god for good weather), so under ideal conditions, this claim is plausible.

Is it waterproof?
Rather. After swatching the blush, I ran my hand under a tap for a while and nothing came off, so it passed that test.

But all in all, I personally found that it was for me, extra work for average payoff.

Along with the package that contained my CandyDoll Ramune Pink lipstick, M.O.S.S also sent me another new product from CandyDoll.

Introducing, the CandyDoll’s newest gloss to the range, CandyDoll Lipgloss in [コットンキャンディ] (Translated: Cotton Candy)!

(コットンキャンディ) (Cotton Candy) is the one of the two newest edition to the family of six CandyDoll glosses.

The other gloss is ジューシーチェリー or Juicy Cherry which is a rich reddish gloss.

Nothing remarkable about the packaging.

A slim tube with a twist cap, the design of the cap is exactly the same as the lipstick and presents the same set of problems with wear and fading of the silver print.

A simple sticker at the bottom indicates the brand name, shade, sensitivity warning and address of the company.

Perhaps the most perplexing thing about the label is the lack of info as to how much product there is in the package. The back of the other glosses say 6.4g but I do wonder if that is the total weight of the product plus the packaging or just the product inside.

Measuring approximately 9.8cm, the gloss is standard sized and fit decently into my evening purse.

It comes with a relatively short wand (makes for easy application) and at the end, a doe foot applicator.

I especially like that the applicator is the furry cloth type because it feels a lot better on my lips (no, I don’t use lip brushes for my glosses – I don’t share them :3)

コットンキャンディis an almost reddish-pink product which, depending on your original lip color, is relatively opaque.

It features tiny glitter bits that, surprisingly, do not feel gritty on the lips and are barely noticeable until scrutinized.

Only applied the gloss to the bottom part of my lips for comparison.

The gloss was not drying - a huge relief to because I’m prone to having flaky, dry puckers.

Not much trouble with visible lip lines either – in fact, it smoothed my lips out pretty well.

It was not very sticky, which made the staying power all the more surprising.

I had the gloss on for about three to four hours (no eating + not much drinking) before it started losing its sheen.

Jae’s Voice:
I have heard some negative things about CandyDoll glosses before. Some girls have complained about lip lines becoming excessively visible etc so I would suppose I lucked out on this and got a colour that suits me well.

As with all my reviews, I encourage you to head down to the stores to try the product out for yourself before purchasing anything. Remember that what works for one may not necessarily work for another.

Girls with sensitive lips would do best to conduct a small patch test before applying anything on their lips.
